West End Trails Project

A New Vision for Access and Quality of Life

Due in part of the efforts of the South Portland Land Trust, the east end of South Portland enjoys an extensive trail network. The Greenbelt Walkway and side trails enable citizens to travel several miles between Bug Light Park on the shore of Casco Bay to the Wainwright ball fields with only three major road crossings.

The City's west end has not been so fortunate. While there have been many developments in the West End of South Portland over the last 30 plus years, the construction of trails and sidewalks to connect them did not keep pace.

Starting in the fall of 2005, the South Portland Land Trust began charting a new vision for pedestrian access, recreational opportunities and a better quality of life for this vibrant part of the city.

Comprised of local businesses and neighborhoods, representatives from city government, area developers, utilities and environmental organizations, the West End Trails Committee has been making that vision become a reality.
