Barberry Woods

A Natural Area 30 Years in the Making

The SPLT is making definite progress in its collaboration with landowners, the City of Portland and Portland Trails in negotiating an access point to a 8.4 acre natural area in central South Portland. The natural area is actually owned by the City of Portland and has been an inaccessible part of their Forest City Cemetery property.

It is clear why this natural area has been on the minds of civic leaders for 30 years. Not only has it been sitting unused, the land is centrally located near the intersection of Broadway and Evans and adjacent to the Greenbelt Walkway. It will provide approximately 2800 feet of deeply wooded trails with lovely water views of wetlands and Barberry Creek. It will be a woodland refuge in the heart of the City.

However, significant engineering and legal costs will be involved. We will be approaching local businesses for assistance on this project soon.
